It’s all in the eye of the beholder..
If you’re looking to sell your home, or in the process of viewing homes to buy, you will have realised quite early on that appearance is everything. Of course, location is everything too. As are size, number of rooms, privacy and local facilities. But appearance is really everything.
So, how do we manage that?
Have you heard of the term ‘staging’? It’s basically the process of decorating the home, setting up each room, to emphasize the positives and downplay the negatives.
Let’s take a moment here and confirm that it’s not a trick. It’s not about deceiving. It’s about dressing up. It’s about wearing your Sunday best (do people still do that), for that all important first date. It’s about making that good first impression. You do it in life all the time, so why not do it in your home?
Where do you start? Well, the basics are simple; clear out and clean up. Get rid of any clutter, including dust!
Then; take a good hard look at your furniture. Remember, it’s your furniture. It’s associated with your memories. Not your buyers’. Ask yourself, is it right for the room and would removing it create more space? Space is good!
Have fresh flowers. Not in every room, but perhaps the kitchen and living room. Keep it simple though.
Got a little adventurous last time you did some DIY? Have a beautiful lilac wall? Don’t. Keep it neutral. Repaint, if you must, but give that plenty of time, so buyers aren’t walking around in the fumes.
Horizontal surface space. Like floor space, have has much free, clutter free, horizontal surface space as possible. Kitchen counters, desks, coffee tables. Keep them clear and, again, dust free.
Keep it clean, keep them keen!
